My Aunt’s Son

Many of my relatives died in Hitler’s concentration camps. An aunt from Hungary lost her son and husband. Having barely survived after contracting typhoid, she made her way to America, married, opened a small motel with her husband, and lived a full life in Banning, California.

When she died, along with inheriting some of her dishes and collectibles, I received a small box of photographs and papers. Many of the papers were written in Hungarian and German. Some came from the Red Cross. Among the papers was a photo of her young son. He must have been three or four years old, in a horse-drawn carriage, dressed in lederhosen with ringlets of light brown hair.

The picture haunts me. This beautiful little boy must have been horrifically frightened when he was separated from his mother and lead to a gas chamber with dozens, if not hundreds of crying children. His lifeless body then shoved into an oven or tossed into a mass grave. Aunt Betty's son

So when I hear denials that the Holocaust happened or read about white supremacists like James Von Brunn bursting into the Holocaust Memorial with a rifle in hand, I gasp. My chest tightens and I become queasy.

I think of my aunt’s beautiful son. She never talked about what happened, not even mentioning his name. But, I can’t stop thinking about him and I cling to the only remnant of him… a black-and-white photo taken on a spring day in Hungary. His innocent smile may have been one of his last.

The Gobbles

A few months before Christmas, I noticed that the people who lived across the street from our Mount Vernon house had a flock of five baby turkeys. The house across the street is actually part of an extended family farm, which includes three houses, a large barn, several dogs, a small field, and numerous pens filled with miniature goats, run-of-the-mill ducks, Canadian geese, ornamental chickens, and Cinnamon Teals.

The son, who is now in his early twenties, has been raising various birds since he was five years old. When I saw the baby turkeys, I assumed that they were being raised by the "table;" however, Thanksgiving came and went and the birds (which now number four) got bigger, and Bigger, and BIGGER!

They’ve also ridden to celebrity status. WheTurkeys that live across the street from our Mount Vernon housen they wander near the street, people in cars will stop and look at them. In addition, if you "gobble" at them, they’ll "gobble" back. They’ve become quite tame and are always together. The older black Labrador Retriever on the farm is often seen escorting and protecting them.

I was about 12 feet from the turkeys when I took this picture. I visit them every week and we have a good "gobble." Because it’s been in the 20’s and 30’s in Mount Vernon, they usually have their feathers fluffed up… or maybe they’re just trying to look tough.

Progress on Bedroom

I’ve had several requests to post progress on our house. We were progressing until summer… good weather… sailing… trips… and Rich’s addiction to watching Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow on MSNBC…Bedroom

Our bedroom is about done. Missing are the closet doors, and some baseboard molding. We’ll also be replacing the single-pane window and adding a skylight when we redo the roof. In the meanwhile, the pictures are hung, bamboo flooring completed… pillow made for the bed… and new bedspread purchased.

The Tiffany lamp on the high boy (above) is from a wonderful woman, Patricia, who I worked with at Dell. The lamp had a broken switch, which Rich repaired in a jiffy. Bedroom pillowsI love the colors the lamp casts on the walls at night.

The pictures are a combination of watercolors and oils, framed antique lace (from my Grandmother), needlepoint, my grandparent’s wedding picture, and a frame copy of Rich’s and my wedding invitation (a gift from a friend).

For additional storage, I placed a bench at the foot of the bed. There’s storage under the seat. by the window is a large dresser and of course, more pictures. The other bench is in our dining room.

Bedroom closetsThe other wall, next to the bed, has a large window with a huge dresser beneath with another Tiffany lamp. And of course, a collage of six paintings… one from Russia.

You can see our "open" closets (right) and Zephyra’s glowing eyes.
